How to Find Cheap Flights and Hotels (Without Spending Your Life on It)
You don't need 40 browser tabs. You need a price alert, one portal, and a rule for when to stop looking.
Flights
- Use Google Flights to look, the airline to book. Google Flights shows every airline (except Southwest) with a price-history graph and a “track prices” toggle. Book on the airline's own site: same price, far fewer problems if a flight changes.
- Southwest is separate. Their fares only show on southwest.com. Their sales are short (the current one, up to 40% off base fares, ends tonight) and the low-fare calendar is the fastest way to find the cheap day.
- Book domestic 1–3 months out, international 2–6. Last-minute is rarely cheap anymore. Tuesday/Wednesday departures still run cheaper than Friday/Sunday.
- Set alerts and stop refreshing. A tracked route emails you when the price moves. That's the whole job.
- Basic economy is fine for a 2-hour flight. It is not fine with a car seat, a stroller and a connection.
Hotels
- Compare, then stack. Check the hotel's own site and one booking site (Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com). Booking sites often pay 2–8% cashback through Rakuten or Capital One Shopping; the hotel direct usually doesn't.
- Loyalty beats cashback for 3+ nights. Hilton, Marriott and IHG points plus elite perks (free breakfast, late checkout) add up to more than a portal pays.
- “Free cancellation” is your friend. Book the refundable rate early, then rebook if the price drops. Set a reminder a week before the cancel deadline.
- Resort fees are not in the headline price. Look for “total price” before you compare.
Cars
Costco Travel and AutoSlash are the two sites worth checking. Both let you book now and rebook free when prices fall — and rental prices fall more often than they rise.
The card trick
An airline co-brand card usually makes its annual fee back on one trip for a family: free first checked bag per person each way. Southwest's card is advertising 50,000 points plus a free first checked bag right now. Only worth it if you'd fly them anyway.
Stack a hotel booking: cashback portal → booking site's own coupon or member rate → pay with a travel card → claim loyalty points if the chain allows it on third-party bookings (most don't — pick points or cashback).
