How to Stack Promo Codes, Cashback and Sales (and Pay Less Than Anyone Else)

Most people take whichever discount they see first. The sale price, or the code, or the cashback. You can usually have all three. Here's the order that works.

The three layers

  1. The sale. The store's own markdown. It's already on the price tag; nothing to do.
  2. The promo code. A percent-off or dollar-off code typed at checkout. Store-wide codes (Ulta's 20%-off codes, Target Circle offers, Walmart app coupons) stack on top of sale prices more often than people think. Brand exclusions are the catch — prestige brands are often left out.
  3. The cashback. A free portal, app or browser extension that pays you back a cut of the store's commission. Rakuten, Capital One Shopping, TopCashback, Ibotta for groceries. You click through (or activate the extension) before you check out.
Order matters. Activate cashback first, add to cart, apply the code at checkout, pay with a card that earns points on that category. Four layers if you count the card.

A real example

Last night, five bottles of NARS foundation at Ulta. List: $55 each, $275 total.

LayerWhat happenedRunning total
Promo code20% off code at checkout$220
CashbackCapital One Shopping welcome bonus, $45 back (paid later as a gift card)$175

Nothing exotic. One code, one extension, and the order was 36% cheaper than walking into the store.

Which cashback tool to use

  • Rakuten — the biggest store list (3,500+). Pays in cash (PayPal or check) every quarter. Best default for Walmart, Best Buy, Macy's, travel sites.
  • Capital One Shopping — free, no Capital One card needed. Pays in gift cards (Amazon, Walmart, Target…), not cash. Strong on activation bonuses and the occasional big percentage. Shows coupon codes automatically at checkout.
  • Ibotta — groceries and receipts. Scan or link your store account; cash out to PayPal or a bank once you hit $20.
  • Store apps — Target Circle, Walmart+, Ulta Rewards. Free, and the app-only deals are real (this week: 20% off all Dyson in the Ulta app).

Three mistakes that kill the stack

  • Clicking through the portal, then opening a new tab from a Google ad. The tracking breaks. Stay in the tab the portal opened.
  • Using a gift card you bought at a discount and expecting cashback. Many stores exclude gift-card payments from cashback.
  • Returning half the order. The cashback for returned items is clawed back — fine, just don't count it before it's paid out.

When it's not worth it

Under $20, skip the portal dance and just use the code. Your time is worth more than 60 cents.

Every deal we post shows the stack — the sale, the code if there is one, and the cashback we'd pair it with. See today's deals.
