Our take
Still the best first travel card in the country. 75k is the card's standard high-water mark, the $95 fee is easy to justify with the $50 hotel credit alone, and it opens the door to the whole Chase points ecosystem. If you're under Chase's 5/24 limit (fewer than five new cards in 24 months) and have never had a Sapphire bonus in the last 48 months, this is the one to get first.
Who it's for
Anyone getting their first real travel card, families who take one or two trips a year, and anyone who wants Hyatt or United transfers without a $500+ fee.

How to stack it
Time the application with a big planned expense (insurance, tuition, a trip) so the spend requirement is money you'd spend anyway.
Shop through a cashback portal and the card's own offers (Chase Offers, Amex Offers, Capital One Offers) while meeting the spend — the bonus stacks on top of normal earning.
Set a calendar reminder for the end of the spend window and another before the first annual fee posts.

Common questions
What is 5/24 and does it apply here?
Chase's 5/24 rule: if you've opened 5 or more credit cards from any bank in the last 24 months, Chase automatically denies most of its cards, including the Sapphire Preferred. Authorized-user cards can count too; check your report before applying.
Answered by StackTheDealI had the Sapphire Reserve before. Can I get the Preferred bonus?
Only if you no longer hold a Sapphire card and haven't received a Sapphire Preferred or Reserve bonus in the past 48 months. Chase treats the two as one family for the bonus.
Answered by StackTheDealDoes the annual fee count toward the $5,000 spend?
No. Fees, interest, balance transfers and cash advances don't count. Only purchases do, and the clock is 3 months from account opening, not from when the card arrives.
Answered by StackTheDealHow soon do the points post?
Usually 6 to 8 weeks after you cross the spend, often on the statement that closes after you hit it.
Answered by StackTheDealCan I downgrade it later and keep the points?
Yes. After the first year you can ask Chase to downgrade to a no-fee Freedom card and keep your points, because they live on the card and transfer when you product-change. Don't close the account outright before moving points.
Answered by StackTheDealWhat's the credit score needed?
Chase doesn't publish one, but most approvals come with scores in the 700s and a year or more of credit history. A thin file is a common denial reason.
The 100k bonus is huge, but the $795 fee is real money and the credits are in halves (January–June, July–December), so do the math on your own travel first.
